Sprotbrough is working to become a Dementia Friendly Community (DFC)
Sprotbrough is Doncaster’s first Churches Together led Dementia Friendly Communities (DFC) initiative supported primarily by Alzheimer’s Society, Sue Ryder, RVS, Age UK, Doncaster CVS, Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group and Doncaster Council.
The aim is to support carers and people with dementia to ‘live well’ by improving awareness and help facilitate early diagnosis and access to services. We are promoting the following events:
• A peer support group 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month at 1-3p.m (in St Marys Church Hall while the work is being done in the Stables) run by Sue Ryder. If there are barriers preventing people attending please let us know so we can arrange appropriate help to get there. Sue Ryder also provide a fortnightly befriending service to people with dementia.
• Dementia awareness sessions can be provided free to anyone. You could become a Dementia Friend to help change the way people think, talk and act about dementia. We have put 20 volunteers through this training so far and more are planned.
• Local businesses scheme -there is opportunity to sign up, get an info pack, become more aware and display the ‘forget me not’ dementia friendly symbol.
• A dementia information open day will be held in the St Marys church hall Friday 14th March 10-3p.m. There will be information and advice on living well and local support services, live music by ‘lost Chord’, therapies, refreshments throughout the day, free food samples from Wiltshire Farm Foods and a raffle. Community transport will be provided to and from the event 10-11 and 2-3 if there are sufficient numbers.
• Memory Cafe -We are working with Alzheimers Society to establish a memory cafe in the Hall in spring, possibly linked to food/music. We will use part of the open day to consult and engage the community what kind of support and activities they want etc.
Please can you ‘spread the word’ and support these events. All enquiries to Therese on 01302 853587/ 07967 345093.
